There is much emphasis on the utility and importance of a rational approach to life. On the reverse we have a condemnation of sentimentalism. It is noticed however, that sentimentalism is more often than not equated with emotionalism. Indeed, there is much merit in a rational approach. However, the beauty of life I believe is captured through our emotions. A cold, unfeeling approach to life would indeed be akin to a journey through a dry desert. That being said, it may also be pertinent to point out, that there is also the undervaluation of qualities of instinct intuition, and as we say, the sixth sense. It is now commonly accepted that the aforesaid faculties are as a result of past experience. Perhaps a well funded research should be undertaken by some brilliant minds on the value or otherwise that should be placed on these such faculties that are thus far not accorded status given to the rational faculties.
This observation brings us to the perception that perhaps there is another overarching faculty that decides the gradation that should be given to a particular faculty, otherwise how can a faculty name or grade itself? The realm of the human mind, indeed of human existence is fraught and shrouded in mystery; it would seem, eternal mystery. But, perhaps that is what gives beauty to our temporal existence.
This perennial search for meaning and and purpose is perhaps what is giving us direction. Perhaps, this is what eggs us forward. Descartes said- I think, therefore I am. I would venture to improvise- I question therefore I am! Amen.
