Kohima, Dec. 1: Nagaland became the first state from Northeast and the second in the country to implement the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) on Saturday. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is in the state for the Hornbill Festival, launched the pan-India emergency app at the Kohima police headquarters and flagged off the ERSS vehicles.
The Emergency Response Support System was first introduced in Himachal Pradesh earlier this week with an aim to help people in distress through a single helpline number.
The home minister congratulated the people of Nagaland, state government, and Nagaland Police for taking the effort to launch this useful app that will help assist people in distress and help the security forces to locate those in distress through GPS.
Under ERSS, all emergency numbers like police (100), fire (101), health (108) women (1090) and disaster response have been integrated with a single emergency number – 112 – which means people in distress can contact police control room, which is manned 24/7, by dialling the number.
The 112 India mobile app also has a special feature called “SHOUT” made exclusively for women with aim to ensure their safety. The feature enables women to get immediate help from nearby registered volunteers besides Emergency Response Centre in times of distress.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio thanked Singh for making his time available for the state and inaugurating the Hornbill Festival which kicked off on Dec. 1 at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama. State’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), T John Longkumer also described the home minister’s visit to the police headquarters as a red-letter day.
