- DIMAPUR — Despite
the ongoing citywide sanitation drive by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC),
instances of waterlogging have been reported in several parts of Dimapur this
May, following intermittent rainfall.
- One of the worst-hit areas on Sunday was MP Road, also known
as Deluxe Point, located in the heart of the city.
- Early Sunday morning, MP Road was inundated after a light
shower, once again exposing the poor drainage system in the area. With no
proper outlet for rainwater, even minimal rainfall turns the stretch into a
flood zone, causing inconvenience to commuters and local businesses.

- According to the India Meteorological Department’s update on
Sunday, Northeast India, including Nagaland, is expected to receive fairly
widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall over the next seven days.
The forecast also includes thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching
speeds of 30–40 kmph.
- Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh on
May 26 and again from May 29 to 31. States such as Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland,
Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will also experience similar conditions during
this period. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely in Nagaland, Manipur,
Mizoram, and Tripura on May 28 and 29, and in Assam and Meghalaya on May 30 and
31.

- In response to recurring urban flooding, the DMC's
Sanitation Branch initiated a drain-cleaning campaign in January, which is
ongoing and prioritised based on the severity and needs of different colonies.
However, officials continue to point out that public negligence—especially the
dumping of garbage into drains—remains a major obstacle to preventing
waterlogging.
- The DMC has urged citizens to dispose of waste responsibly
by using designated collection points or handing it over to municipal garbage
trucks operating in their respective areas.
- In an earlier interview with this newspaper in April, DMC
Administrator Albert Ezung Jami stated that each DMC councillor has been
assigned to conduct awareness campaigns in their wards before June to ensure
the city is monsoon-ready.
