New facilities at Guwahati station to be inaugurated
DIMAPUR — Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off a new train service between Sairang and Silchar and inaugurate new passenger facilities at Guwahati Railway Station through video conferencing on February 9.
In a press release issued on Sunday, the Northeast Frontier Railway stated that the initiative is part of Indian Railways’ effort to strengthen connectivity and passenger-centric infrastructure in the north eastern region.
According to the statement, the flag-off programme at Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram will be attended by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma. Rajya Sabha MP from Assam Kanad Purkayastha will join the event virtually, while senior railway officials and other dignitaries will be present at both Sairang and Guwahati stations.

The new Sairang–Silchar train service is expected to provide direct rail connectivity to Mizoram’s capital region. The release said the service would improve access to tourist destinations in Mizoram and support allied activities such as hospitality, local trade and guiding services. It added that since Silchar is a major centre for higher education and medical facilities, the train would benefit students and patients from Mizoram.
At Guwahati Railway Station, a new passenger facility has been developed in a prime location. The facility includes an air-conditioned lounge, secure sleeping pods equipped with lighting, ventilation and charging points, and a dedicated ladies’ powder room. It will also offer restricted multi-cuisine catering exclusively for paid users.
The press release said the introduction of the new train service and upgraded amenities reflects the NFR’s commitment to modern infrastructure and enhanced passenger experience across the region.
