Dimapur, Nov. 6 (EMN): Lok Sabha MP and former chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, encouraged the students to pursue modernisation and not merely westernisation adding that it is extremely important to remain rooted to one’s identity all the time and appealed not to betray the trust of their parents back home.
Rio said this while addressing the 26th freshers’ cum annual meet of the Delhi Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union (DENSU) on November 4 at Nagaland House, New Delhi.
He expressed hope that in this day and age of “right is might,” the ‘backward’ tag attributed to the Eastern Nagas might soon be made obsolete. He also opined that instead of “rushing back home and quarrelling over what is not available,” Nagas would do well to stay back and grab the universe of opportunities that metropolitan cities like Delhi can provide.
Meren Chenth, Deputy Commandant of 7th NAP, exhorted the students to break free from the stereotypes through determination and discipline and advised them to “think right, study right, and live right”.
In his welcome address, Lamsong Khiamniungan, president DENSU, acknowledged the father-figure role that the chief guest has been playing for the Nagas and expressed his gratitude for the positive response to the invitation. He also urged the members to remain true on the purpose for which they had travelled more than 2000 kilometres away from home.
The event saw introduction of the freshers, presentation of songs, and exhibition of colourful tradition traditional attires. Eche Wangnyu, vice president DENSU, pronounced the vote of thanks and the programme concluded with a benediction said by Loipong, treasurer cum advisor DENSU.
Apart from the chief guest other dignitaries including cabinet minister Kipili Sangtam, Dr. Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, Imtilemba Sangtam, Kejong Chang and Advisor CM Chang along with invitees attended the programme.
