Public sector banks remained open in Dimapur despite NBCC’s Sunday appeal, ahead of a proposed three-day bank strike
DIMAPUR — Public sector banks (PSBs) in Dimapur remained open on Sunday, despite the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) appealing against Sunday banking and urging greater sensitivity towards Sunday worship.
The banks opened on September 27 to maintain continuity of services ahead of the proposed three-day bank strike from September 28 to 30. However, not all banks in Dimapur were open, with private sector banks remaining closed. Customers were seen visiting the open branches to complete their banking work before the strike.
In several other districts of Nagaland, PSBs were reported to have remained closed following appeals from church bodies and NGOs against conducting public transactions on Sunday. Some branches were also reported to have opened for a few hours, although no public transactions were reported.

Nagaland Baptist Church Council questions Sunday bank orders, electoral schedules
The NBCC had earlier questioned why Sunday was treated as flexible when economic interests were at stake but was difficult to accommodate when it came to religious observance. It urged the Centre and the Nagaland government to exercise greater sensitivity while scheduling official programmes, electoral exercises and other public activities on Sundays and major Christian observances.
While acknowledging the need to maintain essential banking services, the council questioned why similar administrative sensitivity could not be extended to government programmes and public exercises that affect Sunday worship.
