DUCCF condemns alleged vandalism and extortion, urging authorities to crack down on illegal bars and strengthen law enforcement in Dimapur.
DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation (DUCCF) has condemned the alleged instances of vandalism, intimidation and extortion linked to the Prysm Lounge incident and called for strict enforcement of the law against illegal bars and nightclubs operating in the city.
In a press release issued on Friday, the federation stated that it had taken serious note of the alleged vandalism and illegal monetary demands involving Naga Students' Federation (NSF) Finance Secretary Katho P Awomi at the nightclub.
The DUCCF asserted that acts of vandalism, intimidation and lawlessness would not be tolerated, irrespective of the position or status of those involved.
It also questioned the district administration over the operation of bars and nightclubs allegedly selling alcohol in violation of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, asking under what category of licences or permits such establishments were being allowed to function.
The federation demanded immediate cancellation of the licences of bars and nightclubs found to be operating illegally, alleging that such establishments have become a source of nuisance for residents and have adversely affected the peace of many localities.
It further called on the authorities to make public the categories of licences under which such businesses are operating.
The DUCCF also urged churches, tribal bodies and landlords to examine the operation of such establishments and take responsibility where necessary. It appealed to business organisations to remain impartial while standing united against extortion and unlawful activities.
“The DUCCF strongly condemns any form of highhandedness, vandalism, or extortion under the garb of social activism or leadership,” it stated.
The DUCCF welcomed the All Nagaland College Students' Union's (ANCSU) decision to distance itself from its former president, Katho P Awomi, but maintained that the law must take its course swiftly and impartially.
The federation also expressed concern over the alleged proliferation of illegal bars, lounges and nightclubs, stating that such establishments contribute to social problems and pose security concerns for residential areas.
It urged the commissioner of police, Dimapur, and the district administration to launch a crackdown on illegal establishments while ensuring protection for business owners against extortion and intimidation.
The DUCCF reiterated that while civil society organisations and student bodies have a legitimate role in safeguarding public welfare, no individual or organisation is above the law.
It also appealed to colony councils and youth organisations to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace, security and civic discipline in Dimapur.
