Protest against student’s death continues in Manipur; dozen of students injured in police action

Imphal, Aug. 10 (EMN): More than a dozen of school and college students sustained injury in police action when the ongoing agitation by the students’ community in Manipur over the death of a school girl in a hostel last month has been intensified here on Saturday.

The sporadic and simultaneous incidents were occurred at three main places in and around Imphal on Saturday afternoon when the agitating students demanding justice into the death of a Class VII student who was found death in a private hostel on July 18, tried to march towards the chief minister’s bunglow.

However, police prevented the students of Imphal College at Kwakeithel Thounaojam Leikai area along the Tiddim road which evoked reaction from the students.

Police fired tear gas shells to control the situation wherein around five students sustained injury.

Three girl volunteers of the Manipuri Students’ Federation who were attending a meeting of the students’ body at the Kwakeithel office also sustained injury during the course of the police action.

Later another police team tried to prevent the students of TG Higher secondary school, Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School, Model School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School from marching forward. During which some more students were hurt in police action. All the injured students were evacuated to RIMS hospital for treatment.

A similar situation was reported in Imphal east district when the students of Churachand Higher Secondary School and Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School tried to march towards the similar destination demanding justice into the death incident. The injured students in the district were sent to JNIMS hospital and given treatment.

Most of the injured students were discharged after giving treatment, hospital sources said.

Meanwhile, womenfolk of Tronglaobi, Kamong, Wangbal and Sega also staged a torch rally and candle light vigil on Friday night demanding justice into the mysterious death of the school girl.

Two rounds of state wide bandhs were also organised by the Joint Action Committee formed against the death incident on July 24 and August 8.

However, state Police department which is currently investigating into the incident had appealed the public to share the facts and evidences to enhance the ongoing investigation into all aspects, instead of making baseless observation.
