Dimapur, July 4 (EMN): Considering the low intensity of investment and high returns in bee keeping, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has organised a programme in which bee boxes, colonies and tool kits were distributed to potential farmers.
The distribution programme was organised by the KVIC under Major Honey Mission at the Multi Disciplinary Training Centre (MDTC), Kuda village, Nagarjan, on July 4.
Speaking on the occasion, KVIC deputy director I Athuba Lusang has insisted focussing more on honey make known its value to the people in Nagaland. He has substantiated his argument by stating that it has low investment and also offers direct employment to lakhs of people especially to the “hill dwellers, tribal unemployed youth, and farmers.”
“Sustainability of this industry is therefore vital to the country’s economic wellbeing and development,” he said adding that it generates not only income but also provides food and medicine while supporting agricultural activities.
Lusang also informed that activities and awareness programmes would be conducted for the public in different areas of beekeeping.
It would include beekeeping in schools in order to spread “Sweet Kranti” (Sweet Revolution), which is an initiative introduced by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, which involves mass production of honey.
Also speaking on the occasion, Kuhovi Sema, principal of MDTC, has stressed on the importance and benefits of honey especially in the health sector
“People do not know the value of honey in Nagaland, we need to educate them on its benefits,” Sema said adding that beekeeping also uplifts people living in rural areas.
Highlights of the programmwe included handing out of beekeeping accessories such as veils, smokers, knives and hand gloves to the beneficiaries. Altogether 40 beneficiaries from Dimapur district would handle 10 bee hives and bee colonies, it was informed.
The beneficiaries would also avail a methodology for marketing the produce under the provision.
It was informed that centralised and decentralised system would be adopted for collection and marketing of honey and other hive products for which the exercise for tendering process is under progress.
