Dimapur, April 30 (EMN): Considering adverse effects of plastic wastes on health and environment, awareness programmes were held in Mon, Tseminyu and Medziphema. During the awareness programmes, the public was urged to avoid plastic and encouraged opting for bio-degradable materials.
In one such awareness programme, a “Plastic waste management” with educational institutions was held on April 30 at Mon town council hall with the Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Thavaseelan K, as the special guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the special guest encouraged all students and participants to look for alternate steps to reduce use of plastics in Mon town. He also distributed prizes to the winners of essay competition on “Plastic waste management and plastic trash collection competition.”
The winners of the essay writing were Wanmei Walim Konyak of Sacred Heart School, Toilih M Konyak of Police Unit School, and Neha Kumari Ram of Model School respectively. The programme was chaired by Ethel Konyak.
Entertainment on plastic waste management was presented by Wangba Konyak and the vote of thanks was delivered by ADC and administrator of Mon Town Council, Hiazu Meru.
In a similar programme, an awareness campaign programme on plastic waste management was held at Christian School, Tseminyu, on April 30.
Speaking in a brief function, EAC Tsogin, Rozy Sangtam called upon the school children to share ideas about plastic waste management to their parents at home. The EAC also encouraged them to follow three steps to manage plastic wastes by refusing to use them, minimise or reduce use of plastics in their daily lives, and to preserve them for recycling purposes.
In order to avoid using plastic bags, cloth carry bags were distributed to the students, teachers and officials present at the programme.
Rozy Sangtam also reminded the gathering that distribution of cloth carry bags signify Tseminyu town becoming plastic free.
Students of BHSS Tseminyu, Njini Thong, and others also spoke about plastic waste management at the programme.
The program was initiated and organised by Tseminyu town council under Swachh Bharat Mission.
Besides, an awareness and community sensitisation on harmful effects of plastic use and one-day training on paper bag making was organised by ATSI & Co. in collaboration with Can Youth at Medziphema public hall on April 30.
The programme was sponsored by the district administration in partnership with the Information and Public Relation department.
Nino Krose, an elderly person from Medziphema, spoke on the topic ‘Action for change,’ where she dwelled on the importance of plastic management, concern of plastic pollution, waste management and the Three Rs- Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle. She also stated that as a responsible citizen, public need to contribute for a better world. She thanked Can Youth for organising and encouraging people to live a better life.
Resource person, Jenpu Rongmei, Can Youth chief functionary, spoke on the purpose of the awareness campaign and highlighted the ecological and social effects of plastic pollution. He also sensitised the gathering on how to minimise the triggering threat of plastic pollution. He further stated that educational institutions and churches must encourage on refusing and reducing plastic products in their daily lives.
To help curb the issue, one-day training on paper bag making was also organised for women.
