President Droupadi Murmu urged peace and reconciliation during her visit to Senapati, inaugurating key projects and leading Nupi Lan Day tributes in Manipur.

IMPHAL — President of India Droupadi Murmu on Friday emphasised that Manipur’s strength lies in its diversity and urged all communities to continue supporting efforts for peace, understanding and reconciliation, as she visited Senapati district on the second and final day of her state visit.
Addressing a gathering at the Multi-Purpose Hall in Senapati town, she said, “The hills and the valley have always complemented each other, like two sides of the same beautiful land,” adding that she understood “with total empathy” the people’s aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous future.
“I reiterate the Government of India’s commitment to the well-being and progress of the people of Manipur, including the people of this region,” she said.
Earlier, the President was received at the Taphou Naga Village Ground helipad by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with DC Senapati Mamoni Doley, SP Sheikh Mohammad Zaib Zakir, GOC 57 Mountain Division Major General SS Kartikeya and representatives of the district’s five tribes, who welcomed her with traditional items and performances.

During the programme, President Murmu inaugurated seven development projects and laid the foundation stones for five others. She highlighted the ongoing initiatives under the PM JANMAN mission in healthcare, education, livelihood promotion and infrastructure aimed at uplifting remote habitations.
The President also interacted with internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Kangpokpi district in the presence of the Governor and district officials. Governor Bhalla, in his address, underlined that balanced development across hill and valley regions remains a priority for the state and stressed the potential of agriculture, traditional crafts and ecotourism.
On Thursday, the President had witnessed a polo exhibition match at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung in Imphal and attended a civic reception organised by the state government. She also inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various projects at the City Convention Centre in Imphal East.
President leads Nupi Lan Day tributes
In a historic first, President Murmu led the state in paying homage to the women freedom fighters of the Nupi Lan movements. At the Nupi Lan Memorial Complex in Imphal, she laid wreaths in the presence of Governor Bhalla, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Assembly Speaker Th. Satyabrata Singh, MLAs and senior officials.
Following the tribute ceremony, she visited the Shree Shree Govindajee Temple to offer prayers before departing for Senapati.
Marking the Nupi Lan anniversary, the state government observed Nupi Lan Numit, 2025, at the Central Hall of GP Women’s College. Chief Secretary Goel recalled the historic contributions of Manipuri women, noting that the movements of 1904 and 1939 symbolised collective resistance against injustice and oppression. He highlighted the enduring significance of the Ima Markets as an emblem of women’s leadership and resilience, and commended Padma Shri awardee Thiyam Suryamukhi Devi for her contribution to classical Manipuri dance.
The programme included song performances by artistes of Shri Shri Balmukunda Dev Music College and a stage play presented by the Nupi Lal Memorial Association. Earlier in the morning, women’s groups organised a Nupi Lan commemorative run in Imphal.
