Nagaland has reported a suspected case of meningococcal disease, which is a life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitides.
Following one suspected case of invasive meningococcal disease being reported in the state, the Health department has initiated preventive measures by directing all residential schools, hostels and educational institutions across the state to remain vigilant in an attempt to control its spread. The teenager, who had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dimapur for a suspected infection, died on Tuesday, underscoring the deadly nature of the disease. It may not be endemic to Nagaland and health officials may have dubbed the case in the state as an isolated one, but that does not eliminate the risk of infection. There is no reason for the public to panic, but preventive measures should be in place to arrest it, as infection can spread particularly in crowded settings. The Health department has promptly responded to the medical emergency by issuing preventive advisories besides intensifying surveillance, including initiating an epidemiological investigation at the school where the suspected case was reported. Public health measures have reportedly been activated, with district surveillance teams closely monitoring the situation. It is reassuring that the concerned authorities and health experts are responding proactively. Alongside these efforts, heightened community vigilance will be crucial in preventing the spread of not only this deadly disease but also all infectious diseases in general. Public awareness and accurate knowledge about the disease can also help ensure early detection.
Meningococcal disease is a life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis, also known as meningococcus, which most commonly presents with meningitis and/or sepsis, according to the World Health Organisation. Its symptoms include sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, a reddish-purple rash, discomfort in bright light, drowsiness or confusion, nausea and vomiting. Anyone showing these symptoms should be referred immediately to the nearest health facility. As it is transmitted through infectious respiratory particles and throat secretions, people living in overcrowded conditions, conflict-afflicted areas with limited access to health services, and communities with low vaccination coverage are more susceptible to a meningococcal outbreak. While vigilance, early detection and prompt treatment are crucial to contain the spread of meningococcal disease, vaccination remains the most effective public health strategy to prevent it. Vaccines are available for six main pathogenic strains (serogroups A, B, C, W, Y, and X), which are responsible for over 95 per cent of invasive cases reported worldwide. Health experts have recommended taking vaccines to avoid serious complications from the bacterial infection. Not to forget that one of the most effective ways to curb the spread of any infection that is transmitted through direct contact and respiratory droplets is good hand hygiene, a practice that gained importance during the COVID-19 pandemic.
