Porbami Social Club Kohima celebrates Khukhu Nye

KOHIMA — The Thunoko Krotho of Porbami Social Club, Kohima, celebrated the Khukhu Nye festival at City Centre in Kohima on Saturday.

The festival is celebrated by the Porba village community among the Chakhesangs to honour girls and women by presenting them with ethnic delicacies.

Küthovolü Keyho, Post-Graduate Teacher in Political Science at Government Higher Secondary School, Jotsoma, attended the event as the guest of honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Keyho described Khukhu Nye as a heritage passed down from ancestors. She urged the community to uphold Porbami's legacy of honesty and truthfulness.

She stated that education and wisdom are vital to achieving excellence in leadership, sports, business, religion, and other fields. Keyho also advocated for equal opportunities for women, noting their achievements in various fields, and highlighted government schemes designed for women's empowerment.

She further encouraged women to act as good ambassadors of their values and traditions when they marry into other communities.

Vechisalu Nukhu, President of the Chakhesang Women Welfare Society (CWWS), delivered greetings and expressed happiness that the festival is dedicated to women.

She informed that the CWWS had adopted the Khukhu festival to be celebrated across all Chakhesang-inhabited areas to promote the culture. Nukhu stressed the importance of learning the mother tongue, preserving cultural attire, and promoting traditional food to prevent an identity crisis. She also called upon the Tenyimi community to learn the Tenyidie language.
