Dimapur, July 15 (EMN): World Population Day and Population Stabilisation Fortnight in Peren district began on July 11 and would culminate on July 24.
A press release issued by the district media officer, Pezanguno Celine Secü, stated that free family planning camps are been held at CHC Jalukie and District Hospital Peren. During the camp free sterilisation along with incentives and free transportation cost were provided to the beneficiary. Besides, 24 health units in the district are providing free family services such as IUCD, condoms, ocp, ecp. The family planning camps are being conducted on the theme “Starting a meaningful tomorrow with family planning.”
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF), the event is observed with the aims to spread awareness on overpopulation, under-population and birth control. It also stated that family planning is not only a matter of human right but also central to women empowerment, reducing poverty and achieving sustainable growth.
It should be acceptable in the sense that contraceptives services and information be provided in a dignified manner respecting both modern medical ethics and the cultures of those accommodated.
It was under such guidelines, work force team under the chief medical officer, Peren, is focussed on the information, education and communication strategies. Mobilisation and intensive awareness are been initiated since June 24 by focussing at the grassroot level with the ASHAs conducting inter-personal communication in all the villages with the ASHA coordinators behind their back.
The health workers are conducting counselling in their respective health units and also distributing IEC materials in local dialect apart from family planning services. Focus group discussion are also been conducted by the ASHA coordinators in all the four blocks.
The work force team would continue the intensive awareness and also provide free family planning services till July 24. So far, 21 laparoscopic and 3 IUCD were performed. A total of 298 condoms, 72 OCPs and 14 ECPs were also distributed.
The sterilization camp for District Hospital Peren has been fixed on July 17.
