The topic of the debate was “Naga women enjoy equal opportunities with men in Naga society.” Commissioner of Police Limasunep Jamir addressed the event. He spoke about how the concept of Human Rights in the world was evolving. “Human rights today is not just about basic rights but many others such as right to education, environment and so on,” Jamir said. He called the idea of gender equality one of the most vital fundamental values. Calling gender equality issues in the Naga society a “matter of discussion,” Jamir urged the participants of the competition to state their views holistically and reflect the issues that are of concern. Taking the example of the global #metoo movement and admitting that women do face gender inequality, the police officer was optimistic that it would soon gain momentum and ‘all will be given equal opportunities to move ahead.’ The moderator for the debate was Temsunochet Changkija, additional commissioner of police. He listed out the rules for the competition and the parameters that were required to be followed. The debaters were divided into two groups, one speaking for and the other against the topic. They were required to speak for five minutes each and if they exceeded, a negative marking was to be given. The parameters were based on time use, clarity, oratory skills, presentation, logic and reasoning and conclusion. The first prize ‘for the motion’ went to Alovika Swu, Mercy Yimchungru, T Peter Sangtam, and Dehtinmang Haolai were declared the 2nd, 3rd and the 4th-placed winners, in stated order. The winners for ‘against the motion’ were Noknyam Konyak coming 1st place; Avishe Sumi, Kuohelie Metha, Y Libenthung Patton at 2nd, 3rd and the 4th place in stated order. The winners received certificates and cash prizes.
