Dimapur, Jan. 14: A 48 team of Poilwa Students’ Union Nagaland (PSUN) undertook trekking to Tangkwak Rezai and Nrai-Kauba on January 8 and 9. The trekking programme was aimed at showcasing the students community on the vast territorial extent of the village, the virgin natural beauties and also the historical importance of the places.
The team was led by the union vice president Heulungying Hengwang and the librarian Machi Mbung.
According to the ancient folklore, Tangkwak Rezai (a pond), which is about 15- 20 kms from the village, is said to be the place from where paddy (rice) originated. The Tangkwak Rezai at all times and seasons is said to have a ripe paddy plant in the middle of the pond (rezai). It is believed that a rat carried the seed from the same plant and dropped it to Tangzangkie valley (currently a wet-terrace cultivated area of the village), from where the villagers found the plant and started to grow it for consumption.
It was told that only the luckiest, toughest and bravest get to see the plant at Tangkwak Rezai. Some few people have claimed to have seen it.
Nrai-Kauba (lovers fall), a double fall waterfall, about 10 to 13 km from the village, came to be so called after a young couple truly in love were washed away by the waters of the Nrai-Kauba. The young couple, whose parents refused to allow their marriage, decided to run away from all those opposing their love. Beginning their escape trip on a wet and rainy summer evening with the hope to grow old together in love, fate however struck in their effort to cross the river in which the young lady was washed away by the waters tearing her body apart from her hand her lover was holding. The young man in despair jumped into the roaring waters sacrificing himself with his lover.
