Imphal, Feb. 19 (EMN): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be arriving in poll-bound Manipur on February 22 to campaign for BJP candidates contesting in the upcoming 12th Manipur Assembly elections, party sources said.
Modi will address an election rally at Luwangsangbam sports complex ground in Imphal East district during his visit.
The All India Congress Committee leader Rahul Gandhi is also arriving in the state on February 21 to address an election meeting at Hafta Kangjeibung in Imphal East district.
For the arrival of the prime minister and AICC leader, the respective political parties have been preparing at the respective venues.
Presently, Tripura Chief Minister Biplap Kumar Deb and Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani are participating in the election campaigns for BJP candidates.
Likewise, AICC senior observer (Manipur) Jairam Ramesh, and Congress in-charge of Manipur Bhakta Charan Das are also camping in Imphal since the last few days to take part in the ongoing election meetings at different locations.
Former chief minister and congress legislature party leader O Ibobi Singh was among the key poll campaigners of the Congress party which fielded 54 candidates in the 60 constituencies of the state.
Sources also informed that Union Minister for Road transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Ports Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal are also expected to arrive here soon to participate in the on-going poll campaigns in different districts of the state.
It may be mentioned that Congress party got 28 seats out of 60 seats in 2017 assembly elections. However, BJP which got 21 seats, managed to form the government with the support of National People's Party, Naga People's Front and others.
A total of 265 candidates including 17 women candidates will contest in the 12th Manipur Assembly elections on February 28 and March 5 to elect 60 legislators. The counting will take place on March 10.
