Imphal, July 30 (EMN): Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to lay the foundation of the country’s first ever sports university in the state prior to this year’s Independence Day observation.
Chief Minister Biren was speaking to media persons on the sideline of inspecting the construction site of the National Sports University (NSU) at Koutruk village in Manipur’s Imphal West district.
Biren who was accompanied by works minister Th Biswajit, Youth affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip, Sekmai MLA Heikham Dingo,Chief Secretary RR Rashmi and a team of officials, during the inspection also informed that due arrangements are being made for the varsity to commence its maiden session at the existing Khuman sports complex in Imphal which is one of the well developed sports complex by sanctioning a sum of Rs 5 crores.
The road construction at Koutruk construction site will start within a week’s time. Seeking cooperation from the public for the construction of the sports university in the interest of the talented sportspersons of the state that brought laurels, he has appealed the people to welcome the Prime Minister during the visit. CM Biren and his entourage also inspected the approach road of the university site and Marjing temple at Heingang where life size statue of pony and polo player will be installed.
Earlier Sports Minister Letpao Haokip led team had already inspected construction site at Koutruk village which has a land area measuring 400 acres against the required land area of 325.90 acres. Officials of the Ministry of Sports including Joint Secretary Rajbir have already reviewed the preparations being done for the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stone sometime back.
