- DIMAPUR — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will
virtually inaugurate 103 redeveloped railway stations across the nation under
the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), on May 22.
- Among these, the historic Haibargaon Railway Station in
Assam, originally constructed in 1887, stands as a prominent beneficiary, the
Northeast Frontier Railway stated in a press release.
- “Located in the heart of Nagaon, this station has long
served as a key transportation node, contributing to the region’s
socio-economic vitality. With an average daily footfall of approximately 1,200
passengers, its transformation under ABSS reflects the government’s vision of
inclusive and sustainable infrastructure growth,” it stated.
- The redevelopment of Haibargaon Railway Station has given it
a contemporary identity while addressing critical regional challenges like
flood vulnerability and limited accessibility.
- The station now features a grand entrance porch, a newly
built station building and a spacious concourse area. Passenger amenities have
been substantially enhanced with a modern waiting hall, modular and
Divyangjan-friendly toilets.

- Additionally a refreshment room along with baby feeding
facilities has also been provided in the newly developed station. The platforms
have been resurfaced and the circulating area has been restructured with
designated parking zones for two, three and four wheelers separately, with
dedicated pedestrian pathways.
- The station also includes tactile tiles, ramps and
accessible ticket counters to ensure universal access. Additional upgrades
include high-mast lighting, upgraded public address systems, improved signage,
landscaped green zones and the installation of murals and a themed statue
celebrating Assam’s cultural heritage.
- According to the NFR, the redevelopment of Haibargaon
station is more than a physical upgrade as it signifies a renewed commitment
towards enhancing passenger experience and promoting regional tourism. With
improved facilities and connectivity, the station is set to act as a gateway to
nearby attractions such as Kaziranga National Park, Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary
and Bordowa Than.
- “This initiative not only strengthens the infrastructural
backbone of Northeast India but also supports local commerce through dedicated
kiosks under the ‘One Station One Product’ scheme.
- “NFR takes pride in being part of this transformative
journey that aims towards connecting the region’s historical legacy with its aspirations
for a vibrant and inclusive future,” the release added.
