Pig carcasses continue appearing in Dimapur’s Lingri River despite warnings, as wholesalers promise an incinerator within three months
DIMAPUR — Pig carcasses continue to turn up in Lingri River near Burma Camp, Dimapur, despite media reports, clean-up drives and warnings, with five more carcasses found floating on Monday.
The latest incident prompted the Burma Camp area councils to meet wholesalers on Monday in the presence of officials from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services. The wholesalers assured the councils that they would stop dumping carcasses into the river and install an animal incinerator within three months for safe disposal.

Awomi said that five pig carcasses were found floating in the river on Monday, adding that carcasses or parts of dead pigs had been found almost daily in recent weeks. The wholesalers cleared the carcasses from the river following Monday’s meeting, he informed.

GB Union Dimapur flags improper pig carcass disposal
The GB had earlier raised concern over the alleged indiscriminate dumping of animal carcasses into the waterway, alleging that a wholesaler operating a piggery at Gorapatty was disposing of dead pigs in the river.
According to Awomi, the Joint Council of Lahorijan, along with the Burma Camp councils, had conducted river-cleaning drives and issued warnings over the dumping. Despite the efforts, he said, the practice had continued.
