DIMAPUR — In a
remarkable achievement, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of Christian
Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) in Chümoukedima has been
awarded Level-3 accreditation by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics Intensive
Care Chapter (IAP-ICC) on January 2, 2025.
An update from CIHSR stated that the recognition was awarded
following a rigorous inspection conducted by IAP-ICC representatives in May
2024 and subsequent approval by the accreditation council.
IAP-ICC is a dedicated branch of the Indian Academy of
Pediatrics that focuses on advancing knowledge, skills and standards of care in
pediatric critical care medicine.
It mentioned that achieving Level-3 accreditation placed the
PICU at the pinnacle of pediatric critical care in India. A Level-3 PICU
provides advanced and comprehensive care for critically ill children with
complex medical, surgical and trauma conditions. It is equipped with
specialised staff, infrastructure and technology to manage the most severe
cases.
Currently, there are around 59 Level-3 PICUs across the
country and CIHSR PICU is one among them. Notably, it currently stands as the
only Level-3 accredited PICU in the entire northeast region of India.
It stated that the department of Pediatrics at CIHSR
Hospital has already been running a DNB Pediatrics postgraduate specialty
training programme under the National Board of Examinations since 2022. With
the new accreditation, the PICU is now eligible to initiate training courses
for nurses in pediatric critical care medicine under the IAP-Indian College of
Pediatrics.
It added that the development would not only elevate the
quality of healthcare available to children in Nagaland but also set a
benchmark for pediatric care in resource-limited settings.
It further stated that the achievement underscored CIHSR
Hospital's commitment to excellence and innovation in pediatric healthcare.
