Dimapur, June 26 (EMN): Citizens of Phuvkiu village converged at its Customary Hall to mark its 5th Phuvkiu day on June 18, organized by Phuvkiu Village Council. Phuvkiu day is an annual event observed since 2013 to commemorate the change of nomenclature from erstwhile Chomi to Phuvkiu. The village is located under Pungro sub-division of Kiphire district inhabited by the Yimchunger.
On the occasion, significance of day was highlighted by P.Cheusumew. He lamented that despite government’s notification on change of its nomenclature on several instances, still various departments wrongly addressed to as ‘Chomi’. Therefore, he requested all concerned departments and individuals to use the name Phuvkiu village for all purposes henceforth.
It may be mentioned that the word ‘Phuvkiu’ has been derived from local dialect ‘Phuvsitiu’, a fruit bearing tree which was abundantly found in the locality and village since its inception. However, for reason unknown, the government recorded it as Chomi which does not have any meaning in any of the local dialects.
Phuvitiu Village Council and Phuvitiu Village Students Union jointly pursued for change of nomenclature and subsequently, a government approved was conveyed notification Vide No. GAB-11/KPE/22/2012 dated Kohima, the 3rd June 2013, the press release stated.
