Dimapur, April 21
A team of members of the Phom Students’ Conference on Tuesday embarked on a weeklong tour of various villages in Longleng district. The tour was flagged off by Longphe Phom, vice president of the Phom Peoples’ Council.
Lauding the efforts of the Phom Students’ Conference for initiating the weeklong area tour program Longphe Phom challenged the students’ leaders to have vision and farsightedness when interacting with communities of the villages of the district. ‘’We are under the threat when we focus on the village education system especially in Longleng district,” he said. According to him, many dropouts students come from educational institutions in the villages.
He also urged the Phom Students’ Conference to render all effort necessary to ‘liberate the education systems in all the villages of the district’ by initiating various programs ‘so that the literacy rate chart of the district might come closer with other districts of the state’.
Highlighting the week-long area tour, president of the Phom students’ Hongkam Ngonyen said that the organization decided to undertake the tour starting from April 20 and conduct special meetings with village leaders covering a host of significant issues. The interactions will discuss a wide range of topics including the present education system ‘by eradicating proxy teaching and ghost teachers’, discuss the importance of conservation of flora and fauna, the problems being caused by Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants, identification and preservation of historical places, revamping and fostering of cultural heritage, and roads and infrastructure, among others.
However, the basic theme will be education through which the organization will seek to strengthen the ‘educational foundation in the area’. Ngonyen invited the public, intellectuals, and civil society to extend their support.
