Phek villages donate vegetables to Kohima residents

Villages from Phek district on Wednesday brought organic vegetables on mini trucks for the residents of Kohima . The vegetables were distributed by the Chakhesang churches in Kohima.

In view of the limited access to local vegetables during the lockdown period, three Phek villages namely Thevopisu, Khulazu Basa, and Porba brought varieties of organic vegetables (mostly wild) on mini-truck and Tata mobile for distribution to the denizens of Kohima for free.

The villagers began their journey in the wee hours and travelled for hours to reach Kohima at their own expenses. Upon reaching the state capital, they entrusted the Chakhesang Baptist Church Ministers’ Hill, Kohima (CBCMHK) Chakhesang Baptist Church Kohima, and other individuals to distribute the vegetables at various locations such as Phool Bhari and Police Headquarters Junction besides distributing to other 16 colonies.

CBCMHK senior pastor, Rev. Dr. Vevo Phesao, who prayed before distributing of vegetables at PHQ Junction, said that such services is humanity at its best. Almost every day, villagers from Phek district have come with truckload of vegetables, which are being distributed to different colonies by the church, he said.

On Wednesday, the three villages have come with trucks of organic vegetables and residents from different colonies have come to collect their shares, he informed and adding that social distancing is maintained during the distribution.
He thanked the villages for coming forward to help the town dwellers. He added that many churches around Kohima are doing humanitarian works.

CBCMHK has reached out to nearly 200 households during the lockdown period.
“In a time such as this we are going through a difficult time but our message is-we have hope in the Lord,” the pastor added.

One of the village members from Khulazu Basa village, Sekhoyi Chuzho said about 280 people from the village were engaged to collect the vegetables from the forest, while about 60 others have helped in binding for distribution. Around 15 different varieties of vegetables including banana sprout, eatable ferns, fish mint, sour leaves etc. were brought for distribution.

A resident of Kohima, who received her share of relief, has thanked the churches and villagers for distributing vegetables for free at a time when going outside to the market and finding local vegetables has become a challenge. Residents of Kohima, irrespective of community and religion, were seen holding their share of vegetables during the day.
