Dimapur, Oct. 21 (EMN): Phek district observed Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day with salt traders in Phek town. The event was conducted with the theme “iodised salt, traders’ responsibilities,” according to a press release from the district media officer of the establishment in Phek, on Sunday.
Speaking during the program Dr. Vethihulu, the deputy chief medical officer of Phek district highlighted to the participants the importance of Iodine. The medical officer talked to them about the various disorders cause by iodine deficiency, and about the various sources of iodine, among other topics.
Subdivision officer (civil) Neilezo Tep also exhorted the participants. He said that selling iodized and quality salt was a responsibility of the traders “which can prevent he community from deficiencies of iodine,” the press release stated. He talked about how to store salt.
During the program the salt traders signed a pledge that they will not sell non-iodized salt. They assured to ‘follow the roles and responsibilities given to them,’ the press release explained. Leaflets and posters stating information about iodine was handed out to the participants.
Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day or World Iodine Deficiency Day is observed every year on October 21. The objective of the event is to generate publicity about adequate use of iodine and to highlight the consequences of iodine deficiency.
Iodine deficiency disorders have become a major public health problem worldwide. According to the WHO around 54 countries are still iodine-deficient. Iodine is a micro nutrient which is required for the human growth and development.
