Dimapur, June 18 (EMN): Five-day farmers training programme on horticulture crops for Phek district, organized by Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema in collaboration with the District Horticulture Office, Phek was successfully completed.
The inaugural programme was launched by Dr. Menguzenuo Chielie, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Chozuba as chief guest. In his address, he shared the importance of horticulture crops both for human and animal consumption. She also encouraged the farmers to go for mixed farming and work hard for sustainable development.
During the technical session, Shisarenla Aier, Assistant Horticulture Specialist from CIH highlighted the activities of CIH and welcomed the farmers to apply for various skill development courses offered by the same Institute. She also spoke on the importance and scope of banana cultivation at Chetheba area and post harvest techniques with value addition on banana.
Senti Longchar (DK), Horticulture Officer, Phek said that guava is a potential crop for Chetheba area because of its suitable climate and soil condition.
During interaction and discussion hour, the farmer’s union had a common problem of lack of technical know-how for drying and processing units.
During the inaugural programme, secretary of the Phek Farmer’s Union (Chetheba Unit) highlighted on various activities carried out by farmers and urged the department to assist the poor farmers in all possible means for the benefit of the farming community.
Pfutsero Government College also appreciated the CIH and DHO Office Phek for conducting a special training programme on Floriculture in collaboration with the institute. The programme concluded successfully with giving away of certificates to 250 participants from various villages and institution.
