  • DIMAPUR — With an aim to educate students about their rights and the legal frameworks designed to protect children, the Peren District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) organised a comprehensive legal awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School in Ahthibung under Peren district on March 21.

  • The resource persons included retainer lawyer Asungbe N Hau, panel lawyers Italang Ramlia and Kidungyi Putlang. An update from Peren DLSA stated that each speaker spoke on critical issues affecting children and provided insights into various laws and mechanisms in place to safeguard their welfare.

  • Kidungyi Putlang opened the session by explaining the working mechanism of the legal services authority and the proactive measures undertaken by the Peren DLSA to spread legal awareness. He also highlighted the various schemes available to assist individuals in need of legal aid.

  • Wonchibeni V Patton, secretary of Peren DLSA, delivered an impactful address on crimes affecting children including anti-ragging laws and cybercrimes. She urged students to exercise caution while using mobile phones and social media platforms to ensure their safety online.

  • It stated that Asungbe N Hau focused on the Juvenile Justice Act, emphasising the distinction between children in conflict with the law, children in contact with the law and those in need of care and protection.

  • Italang Ramlia discussed offenses covered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He also conducted an interactive session on identifying good touch and bad touch, thereby empowering students with knowledge to recognise and report inappropriate behaviour.

  • Meanwhile, Chichano Ngullie, principal of the Athibung Government Higher Secondary School, has expressed gratitude to the legal services team for organising an informative and insightful awareness programme in the school. She acknowledged the team efforts in educating the students on important legal matters and emphasised the significance of such initiatives in empowering young minds.
