Nagaland Home Minister, Y Patton today said that police department is the eyes and ears of the people and it is responsible to secure and safeguard the lives and properties of its citizens. Addressing the gathering of high ranking police officers in the State during the launching function of a Nagaland Police SMS based Vehicle Monitoring System (NPSVMS) at PHQ, Patton said, “even as the people of Nagaland long for lasting peace and harmony in the society, there are some sections of people who are hell-bent to create fear psychosis in the minds of the Naga people as they resort to attacks on the lives of innocent people”.
Sending a strong message to police officers, particularly to the Unit Commandants and SPs of different District Executive Force (DEF) with regard to present day situation in the State, he said, of late several bomb blasts and firings that have taken place in Kohima and other districts like Wokha, Dimapur and Mokokchung have claimed several innocent lives including some Assam Rifles jawans. Nonetheless, he regretted that ‘no much breakthrough has been made in arresting the perpetrators’.
The State Home Minister therefore called upon all the responsible police officers “to maintain strict vigil over citizens and to bring to book all those anti-social elements in near future”.
“Nagaland police personnel are second to none in tackling anti-social elements only if they are equipped with modern technologies and facilities,” Patton maintained.
Lost vehicles to be tracked through SMS
In a welcome move for vehicle owners, the Nagaland Police Department today added another feather to its cap with the launching of the first ever SMS based Vehicle Monitoring System called the Nagaland Police SMS Vehicle Monitoring System (NPSVMS).
Making a power-point presentation of the new system during the formal launching ceremony at Police Headquarters here, IGP (Range) Wabang Jamir, IPS, the brain behind setting up of the system, said the NPSVMS provides a facility for the public to quickly inform the department of theft of vehicle via SMS to public hotline number 8415900400.
Appealing vehicle owners to get their vehicles and mobile cell phone numbers registered at the nearest police station, he said via this service, a registered owner of the vehicle can SMS the keyword ‘LOST’ on hotline number and the details of the lost vehicle will be instantly sent to all police check-gates in the State.
In order to access this service, one must complete a one-time free registration process by getting to their nearest police station and collect the NPSVMS registration form or download it from www.npsvsm.com.
During verification, one has to produce the original copy of ID proof and registration certificates of the vehicle(s) to be linked, he said, adding that the confirmation SMS will be sent to the registered mobile number after few days.
Launching the system, State Home Minister, Y Patton said vehicular theft has become a matter of serious concern in the State as many professional gangsters from other states have been operating vehicle theft mission on our streets in magnitude.
The Minister expressed confidence that with the development of a new IT system, the ability and efficiency of Nagaland Police personnel in curbing criminal activities particularly vehicular thefts will be further enhanced.
The Department should ensure that sufficient number of police personnel are selected to undergo professional trainings to man the system and to serve its purpose and remain in the good books of the citizens.
He also said that the introduction of this IT system would definitely serve a great relief to the registered vehicle users as there will be quick delivery of information on loss of vehicles and thereby instant reaction could be initiated for recovery of the stolen vehicle by the police personnel and on the other hand a great blow to the habitual vehicle lifters.
Congratulating the department for ushering in a new vista of hope to the people of Nagaland by way of launching NPSVMS, he expressed hope that the system will go well in the service of the people and bring accolades to the department as well.
The Home Minister also released the Nagaland Police Officers’ Directory on the occasion.
State DGP L.L.Doungel, IPS stressed on the proper use of the system while maintaining that the personnel engaged in the system will have to keep themselves updated with advance technology. He also said that the personnel has to act in order to make the system function.
With the launching of the system, he called upon the police department to have a new vision and bring up a new way to look into enforcement of law.
