DIMAPUR — President of AIIMS Guwahati, Padma Shri awardee and renowned orthopaedic surgeon Prof. Dr. BKS Sanjay, delivered a lecture on road safety at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati on January 27.
The lecture was attended by faculty members, staff, and students of the institute, an update stated.
Drawing from his vast clinical and academic experience, Dr. Sanjay highlighted the alarming rise in road traffic accidents and their long-term physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences.
He emphasised the importance of responsible driving, strict adherence to traffic rules, and the mandatory use of safety measures such as helmets and seat belts to prevent serious injuries and fatalities.
He also shared real-life clinical experiences to underline how minor negligence on roads can result in life-altering disabilities and irreversible loss.
Dr. Sanjay’s lecture stressed the collective responsibility of individuals, institutions, and society in promoting road safety awareness and nurturing a culture of safe road behaviour.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion, during which participants actively engaged with Dr. Sanjay on preventive strategies, policy initiatives, and the vital role of education and youth engagement in reducing road traffic accidents. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, urged students to change their eating habits from junk food to more nutritious and balanced diets, and to transform their lifestyle practices from destructive to more constructive and health-promoting actions.
