Dimapur, Nov. 20 (EMN): The public action committee (PAC) of the Naga Council of Dimapur (NCD) has condemned an incident where a truck driver coming from Dimapur to Imphal was reportedly beaten up by “suspected armed NSCN (IM) cadres” at around 9.45 am on November 20, near Khuzama Excise check gate in Kohima district.
The PAC informed through a press release on Wednesday that the armed cadres, who came from a taxi, demanded “tax” of INR 15, 000 from the driver.
“It is learnt that the truck driver requested the cadres to speak to the owner which angered the suspected cadres and was badly beaten up. The cadres reportedly snatched (away) INR 10,000 from the driver. The driver was taken for treatment at Mao, reported police sources,” the statement from the PAC read.
“PAC NCD strongly and vehemently condemn such act of daylight extortion, high-handedly harming and endangering the lives of drivers and travellers crossing the state. It is beyond comprehension that NSCN (IM) should create such a situation when their leaders are in talks with GoI in the highest level and Nagas looking forward to a long lasting settlement,” it added.
The committee has demanded that the police nab the perpetrators and accord befitting punishment. It demanded also that the “NSCN (IM) to identify the cadres and handover the culprits to the administration at the earliest for punishment deem fit.”
