Diphu, Feb. 21 (EMN): The Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Karbi Student’s Association (KSA) and Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA) have jointly opposed the move of the government to make the people of Karbi Anglong living along the border with Meghalaya to exercise their franchise in the coming Meghalaya assembly elections. The was stated in a press note issued by said organisations on Feb. 21 Wed.
The press statement stated that just for narrow political gains the names of a number of people residing on the border with Meghalaya are systematically and clandestinely included in the electoral rolls of Meghalaya by vested interest and Anti-Karbi Anglong elements operating in that part of the area.
The organisations in the release have demanded the Election Commission of India to delete all such names from the electoral rolls of Meghalaya on the principal of one person one vote. Inclusion of the names of the people of Karbi Anglong in the Electoral rolls of Meghalaya is constitutionally illegal as one person can enrol only in one constituency and cannot become double voters.
The move of the government is a danger as the inclusion of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills in the framework Agreement of the Naga Accord because once people of Karbi Anglong exercise their votes in the Meghalaya Assembly Election the people and the area would be deemed to be inside the territory of Meghalaya which would be emboldened the protagonists of Block-1 and Block-2 to carry forward their agenda, the release stated.
The statement was undersigned by KSA General secretary Mandal Enghi and Daniel Teron, propaganda secretary, ASDC.
