DIMAPUR — Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) and the Podinakup Public Organisation (PPO), an apex body of 10 villages under Lotha Middle Range, have strongly condemned the alleged physical assault meted to assistant professor Dr. LobenoMozhui by Prof. Sarat Chandra Yenisetti at Nagaland University, Lumami.
An update from DNSU stated that the egregious act was a blatant violation of professional ethics, academic integrity and human dignity. While denouncing the incident, it stated that such act has no place in any institution of higher learning.
DNSU also expressed shock to learn that the culprit was a habitual offender and wondered why actions were not initiated against him by the authorities in the past.
The union has demanded the authorities to take immediate and decisive action against Prof. Yenisetti including his termination from service.
Meanwhile, DNSU has extended support to the Lotha Students' Union (LSU) in their demand for his termination within four days. It has also expressed solidarity with the victim and the student community.
In another statement, the Podinakup Public Organisation (PPO), while condemning the recent physical assault meted out to one of its bonafide member, stated that the unpardonable act committed by the professor was not only an insult to the individual but a direct attack on the principles of education. It added that the act was also a direct confrontation towards the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women,” the organisation stated.
Stating that any form of physical assault against any educator is unacceptable, the organisation called upon the concerned authority to initiate swift and decisive action to bring the perpetrator to justice and ensured that such incidents are never repeated in future.
Meanwhile, the Lotha Officers’ Association (LOA), while condemning the November 25 incident, has termed the act as ‘barbaric and unbecoming of an intellectual person in a civilised world.’
It stated that the cruel disregard and harmful physical act towards a lady intellectual by Prof. Sarat Chandra Yenisetti deserve strong condemnation by everyone. It added that the culprit must be awarded severe punishment befitting the heinous act so committed in order to deter such occurrences in the future.
The LOA stated that any attempt to deviate from the law of the land to protect the culprit would be considered as a direct confrontation against the association. It further emphathised with Dr. Lobeno Mozhui and wished her a speedy recovery from the mental physical trauma.
In a separate press statement, the Nagaland University Students' Union, Lumami (NUSU-L), stated that the egregious act of violence and intimidation was a clear violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of the individual which left the department reeling and the victims traumatised.
Expressing solidarity with the victims, the union demanded that the university administration takes stringent action against the perpetrator, including immediate termination of Prof. Yenisetti from his position at the University.
NUSU-L asserted that it would not sit idle and allow such behaviours to continue.
