
Dimapur, April 28 (EMN): Dr. Hormila G Zingkhai, Assistant Professor, department of Sociology, St. Joseph’s College (SJC) (Autonomous), Jakhama informed that out of 370 Geographical Indication (GI) tagged products of India, there are only four from Nagaland -- the Naga Mircha (King Chilli), Naga Tree Tomato, Chakhesang shawls and Nagaland “sweet cucumber” -- and apprised the students and the faculty members that there are numerous potential products from Nagaland with the possibility to get registered with GI tag.
She was giving a talk on ‘What is Geographical Indication (GI) Tag?’, at a programme, organised by the department of Sociology, SJC (A) in commemoration of World Intellectual Property Day on the theme ‘Intellectual Property and Youth Innovation for a Better Future’ at the College Indoor Stadium on April 26, an update informed.
She concluded by calling on to the young students to understand the underlying dynamics between safeguarding the legacy of the rich Naga cultural heritage, abounding natural resources inherited from the forefathers and the protection of the Naga identity, and to utilise their ideas, rational thinking and creativity to protect it and thus, build the way for a better and brighter future for the Naga society.
Dr. Khobu Tsolo, Assistant Professor, department of Sociology, SJC (A) also gave a talk on “Plagiarism”. He focused on the aspects of plagiarism especially in the fields of academia, how it destroys the integrity of the academic world as it is an act of stealing the intellectual property-- the writings, the ideas -- of another.
He highlighted how as a student, one can avoid plagiarism, intentional or unintentional, by being more responsible and sincere in their duties. He mentioned that citations, paraphrasing, quotations and summarising are the different ways that one can employ, while using the ideas/writings of someone else to substantiate our work. He encouraged the students to begin by giving due credit to the writers, scholars whose ideas and works they refer and use in their academic exercises like assignments, project/report/dissertation writings.
The students of UG 4th semester students also displayed the different Naga ethnic products.
Meanwhile, in Tuensang, Sao Chang College (SCC) also celebrated the day in collaboration with the dept. of Economics, SCC to increase awareness on issues related to intellectual property rights. Apila Sangtam, Advocate, Gauhati High Court Bench and empanelled lawyer of KDLSA was the resource person and informed the participants on the subject matter of intellectual property rights stressing on Patent Act, procedure of obtaining patent, industrial property and copyright.
