DIMAPUR, MAY 21 : A member of NSCN (U) was arrested after shooting an autorickshaw driver on the leg Saturday afternoon at Blue Hills Station area. Dimapur police authorities have identified the accused as one “sergeant major”, Kihoto Yeptho, aged 32.
According to the officer-in-charge of East Police station, Mekando Odyuo, the accused aimed his pistol at police personnel who were on duty at the Police Assistance Booth (PAB) below flyover Dimapur at around 3.30 pm.
Reportedly, there was a gunshot which prompted the cops on duty to “rush out of the PAB”. On seeing the cops approaching, the accused fired upon them and attempted to flee. The bullet however hit a driver of an autorikshaw that was at the parking lot, on his left thigh.
The cops on duty chased after the gunman and managed to nab him when he fell into the drainage, Odyuo said. He also said that the police are still investigating why the accused had resorted to blank firing in the first place. Three empty shells and one .32 revolver were recovered from his possession.
The victim, Alo Rengma was immediately rushed to District Hospital Dimapur and is undergoing treatment. The accused, who hails from Akuluto town under Zunheboto district and residing at Half Nagarjan Dimapur, is under the custody of East Police Station Dimapur.
