Imphal, May 4 (EMN): One poacher who was accused of killing three hog deer or Kharsa in local tongue inside Keibul Lamjao-the country’s only floating national park in Loktak Lake in Manipur, was arrested by the park authority and detained in forest custody. The arrested poacher has been identified as Md Alam Khan (24) of Komlakhong under Mayang Imphal police station.
The incident took place when Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) guards detected hunting by some poachers including the arrested one inside the park on Wednesday noon, forest officials said. The hunting team sneaked into the park from its northern side by using local made boats.
“Some of them escape from the scene when our park guards rounded up the poacher,” says a forest officer of the park when contacted. “We also recovered bullet ridden dead bodies three hog deer including a mother deer inside the park. We’re investigating the case.”
On Thursday, the accused person who was booked under Wildlife Protection Act 1972 was produced before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate and remanded in forest custody for nine days. KLNP is the only natural habitat of dancing deer-Brow antlered deer or Sangai, an endangered deer species by IUCN and it is located under Bishnupur district.
