The Army has killed a Naga underground cadre in a reported encounter that took place in Khoupum area of Tamenglong district on Wednesday morning.
Sources said the gun battle occurred at Luwangkhulen Part-I under Khoupum Police Station at about 10:30 am. The encounter was taken place between personnel of 8 Gorkha Rifles (GR) and a combined team of a Naga underground outfit. The name of the Naga outfit is yet to be ascertained.
The sources identified the slain cadre as Thaimei Kanamsoi, 40, hailing from Luwangkhulen Part-II of Tamenglong.
Following intelligence reports that a meeting of outfit was being arranged in Luwangkhulen Part-I, the 8 GR team carried out operation in the area. The GR team came under fire from the armed cadres as it reached the area. A gun battle ensued between the two sides, which lasted about 40 minutes.
Later, the GR team called in additional forces from the Assam Rifles and conducted a massive search in the area to nab the militants. No arrests were reported during the search, but the body of the slain cadre was recovered.
