Dimapur, Oct. 12 (EMN): Two persons were killed and six injured when strong winds uprooted two trees at Supermarket in Dimapur on Wednesday.
The ill-fated incident occurred around 3 pm.
The Dimapur Police PRO, Bharat Laxman Markad, told Eastern Mirror that six persons -- four men and two women -- were injured, while two persons died from the accident.
One woman vendor, who was seated opposite Saramati Hotel, was hit by the tree and declared ‘brought dead’ to the hospital. The deceased, identified as 33-year-old Holika, was a resident of Burma Camp in Dimapur.
Meanwhile, Vijay, a fruits vendor, approx. 45 years, succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
The pregnant sister of the deceased was also reported to be grievously injured.
Out of the eight victims, four were vendors and four customers.
The injured persons are being treated at District Hospital Dimapur, the PRO informed.
This is not the first incident at Supermarket where an uprooted tree has posed risk to public lives. Earlier this year, strong winds uprooted a tree at the market, which fell and damaged a vehicle but no casualty was reported.
Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly and Advisor, Power department, H Tovihoto Ayemi expressed shock and sadness over the incident at Supermarket in Dimapur.
Ayemi, who is away from Nagaland on official assignment, immediately contacted the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur and informed the district administration to effectively take stock of the situation along with the intervention of the district disaster management agency and the Dimapur Municipal Council, an update stated.
Ayemi further conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.
