Joy, peace, goodwill, Amity; in fact all the positives are associated with Christmas. Let us consider the Christmas songs; some songs are of joy, some of pure pathos. It would seem as if some were being sung by the melodious haunting voice of Emmylou Harris. I wonder why Ms. Harris never sang Christmas songs! Correct me if I am wrong. Some complain about the commercialisation of Christmas. Indeed, it would seem that the Yuletide season has become more about the buying and selling. However the topic for my discussion is not to moralise. I would rather dwell on the fact that there is something unique about Christmas. What is that uniqueness you might ask me. Well, let me add an addendum- many things are unique about the season. It’s bitterly cold in most parts of the world, except for the Australians; it’s summer for them, and they are the losers for it! For how can you feel Christ in the hot Australian sun. Another unique thing about Christmas is the virgin birth. Indeed to conceptualise from a human point of view- virgin birth is impossible! Thus we are encouraged to be fervent in our hope. For what is humanly impossible, is nothing for God. Thus, Christmas tells us that whatever our human travails, there is always the concept of the divine; for whom all things are possible, all we have to do is believe. Merry Christmas!
