Dimapur, Nov. 24 (EMN):
Two to three dead bodies, on an average, go unclaimed in a month in Dimapur, according to police.

The public relations officer (PRO) of Dimapur Police, Relo Aye, told Eastern Mirror that most of the victims are from outside the state, rendering it difficult, or even impossible, to identify the person or trace family members.

In the commercial hub, dead bodies are found and reported to the police almost on a daily basis.

According to Aye, the bodies are kept in the morgue for 72 hours after post mortem. “Investigation is carried out in these 72 hours; and in the meantime, we also give a press release,” he said.

The officer informed that permission is taken from the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office for disposal of the unclaimed bodies after which the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) takes the necessary steps for disposal.

The Administrator of DMC, Albert Ezung, also told this newspaper that after all formalities are completed by the police and the Health department, the unclaimed bodies are handed over to the DMC.

“Once we get the clearance from the departments, our sanitary workers cremate it,” said Ezung adding that most of the unclaimed bodies are non-locals and are disposed off at the Hindu cremation ground in Walford colony.
