The outbreak of novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has created a global health crisis that has deeply impacted the way we perceive and approach our everyday lives. Our sense of agency has been threatened not only by the contagion rate but also by social distancing measures required to contain the spread of virus. In essence, we are in a new world order wherein we must refrain from doing what is inherently human, which is to find solace in the company of others. Within this context of physical threat and social distancing, two major issues have emerged- the importance of Health (physical and mental) and the essentiality of Social Media in keeping people connected. June 23 is Olympic Day, a day dedicated to the ‘celebration of sport, health and being the best you can be’ as proposed by the International Olympic Committee. Though this day is celebrated every year with much fanfare; this year marks the first ever 24-hour digital Olympic workout, a way of staying active in a digitally connected and combined effort.
The beginning of Olympic Day can be traced back to 1947, and ever since, Olympians have been a source of inspiration. During these tough times brought on by the pandemic, Olympians have been motivating us with their energy and positivity through home workout videos, and sharing mindful and uplifting tips and stories during lockdown despite the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee estimates that 5000 Olympians engaged with an astonishing 243 million people online, spread over more than 50 countries. This year, the message is based on the power of sport to bring hope and optimism; it aims to highlight the solidarity and resilience of mankind. Athletes around the world will lead live workout sessions at local time across 20 time zones on the social media application Instagram. India’s PV Sindhu will be coaching us through badminton from Hyderabad.
The first Nagaland Olympic Games was initiated in 2017, a small significant new journey for sport in the state. Another milestone was reached just in 2018, as Nagaland participated in the first Northeast Olympic Games held in Imphal. The state has much to progress and the spirit of sportsmanship and discipline must be worked upon and carried forward to bring pride to Nagaland. Let us encourage more youths to follow in the footsteps of Late Dr. Talimeren Ao and Chekrovolü Swüro in aspiring, working and achieving the feat of becoming an Olympian. The Olympic values of excellence, friendship, respect and solidarity have become more important now than ever before. The importance of health and healthy lifestyle has never been more acute as we aim to keep our bodies strong and resilient to the threat, that is, Covid-19. Let’s take back control of our health. Let’s stay strong, active, and healthy through the safe comfort of our homes via the medium of social media’s human networking sites.
