Dimapur, September 1: A three-day trainer’s training on production technology of underexploited horticulture crops of North East Region (NER) on the theme “Crops for the future” was organized by Central Institute of Horticulture, DAC & FW, Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, at CIH Training Centre, Medziphema, from August 29 to 31 for the State government officials of Horticulture Department. The objective of the training was to equip the horticulture officials to become master trainers in their respective district on underexploited horticulture crops.
Addressing the programme, Dr. Lallan Ram, Director of CIH, while stressing on the importance and potentials of underexploited crops in NER, advocated the need of such kind of training to popularise these crops in the region. He also deliberated that despite of these crops having wide diversity in NER, it is still being under utilised and under exploited. He, therefore, urged the trainees to be well equipped with the production technology of under exploited horticulture crops so that the information could be disseminated to the farming community.Resource persons namely Dr. KK Jindal, UGC Emeritus Fellow, Retired ADG Horticulture ICAR and Ex-Director of Research, UHF Solan, Himachal Pradesh & CAU, Imphal, Manipur; Dr. VK Verma and Dr. H Rymbai, Scientist, ICAR Research Complex for Northeast Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, presented on various topics like prospects and strategies for production of higher quality underexploited temperate fruits, diversification of underutilised temperate fruits in sub-temperate & sub-tropical zones of NEHR, underutilised crops, trends, challenges & opportunities in the 21st Century, Constraints & strategies for the development of underexploited horticulture crops, Underutilised vegetable & spice crops, Root & tuber crops & underexploited flowers of NER.
In the valedictory function, speeches on behalf of the participants were delivered by Meyasashi, DHO Mokokchung, and Dr. Temjenmenla, AHO Zunheboto.
Dr. Lallan Ram, Director of CIH also exhorted the participants to work as an ambassador for transfer of technology at the farmer’s field and expressed hope that the information gathered and knowledge gained during the training will go a long way in helping the farmers of the State.
Meanwhile, the participants have expressed gratitude to the institute for conducting training relevant for the region. Certificates along with reading materials were distributed to all the participants.
Altogether 27 participants from 10 districts attended the training programme. The training programme was coordinated by Ms. Shisarenla Aier, Training In-Charge, CIH, Medziphema, Nagaland.
