Kohima, June 17 (EMN): In a first of its kind in the State, the Officers Hill Youth Organisation (OHYO), Kohima, launched the ‘Smart Colony: GIS and 3D Map’ – zero budget community project with Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, Rajesh Soundararajan, as the chief guest held at Hotel Urra, Officers Hill, Kohima.
The present initiative is a unique government and voluntary community participation as well as collaboration, which aims to provide location based address details of the citizens so that correspondences as well as basic public services can be properly delivered at the citizens doorsteps without any hassles of finding address.
Under this project, the youth of Officers Hill Kohima visited and mapped 996 households in the colony and created geocode map integrated with a digital address database for analysis to enable smart urban planning and even doorstep home delivery. The zero budget project initiative, it informed, was completed by 18 OHYO volunteers under a record time of three weeks.
Launching the project, Soundararajan said people cannot shy away from technology in this era which has the prospect to improve our everyday lives. He maintained that it is upon the people to find our ways on how best to use the technology to improve and cater to the needs of the common men in day-to-day lives.
Appreciating the efforts of the colony youth, Soundararajan opined that their initiation is a reminder on the capability of the youth to bring change to the society through concerted efforts, which he emphasised need to be strengthen.
This, he said, is a good step towards contributing to the development and progress of the State towards preparing for a Smart City. He said the people of the State need to synchronise ‘what we started today with the future’ by meticulously planning the development works on how our city should be in the near future.
The DC also expressed hope that with the launching of this project, other communities and colonies will replicate the same concept so that uniformity is maintained and Kohima can be transformed into a planned city.
Presenting the technical aspects of the project, team leader of the project, Yanpvuo Kikon said this will help in smart addressing system integrated with a database and app to easily find any location as well as help in city planning and administration as well.
Kikon said the initiative hopes to pave way for many smart solutions to be developed using this as the foundation which can enable even the postman, courier companies, taxis, citizens, tourists to easily locate any address using their mobile phones and apps.
He maintained that this simple interface hopes to gradually transform Officers Hill and Kohima into smart colonies, a first of its kind in Nagaland, where businesses can now start home deliveries by entering the House Number or Google ID or enter House Owner’s name and locate the house easily on the website www.nagalandaddress.in.
It may be mentioned that the Nagaland State Address Geoportal System with GIS & remote Sensing Centre as the nodal agent is meant to represent a comprehensive geocoded postal addressing system in the State in an effort to improve the efficiency of mail delivery system, aiming to keep up with the strategic development of the e-government, and reflects the State government’s direction towards using the latest technologies in the ICT domain.
Besides others, the addressing system also aims to cover the entire Nagaland cities, blocks, circles and villages by using the latest technology in the domain of GIS, where retrieving locations for residential and commercial building is possible in order to reach all citizens, residents and businesses within the State.
