Dimapur, July 23 (EMN): A camp for adolescent girls themed on information, education and communication (IEC) and an advocacy under the National Nutrition Mission was conducted in Mon district’s chief medical officer’s (CMO) conference hall, on July 23 in Mon.
The programme was conducted with the theme ‘good livelihood,’ updates stated.
The government publicity agency, the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR), issued updates on Tuesday about the camp for girls.
A medical officer at the CMO’s establishment in Mon, Dr. Elizabeth spoke on the topic ‘awareness on health nutrition’ and anaemia, the updates stated.
Elizabeth, no surname given in the IPR report, said adolescence is the state of transition between childhood and adulthood. It is a window of opportunity for the improvement of nutritional status and correction of poor nutritional practices, she said.
‘Any nutritional deficiency that is experienced during this critical period of life can have an effect on the future health of the individual and their offspring. Anaemia is the most widespread micronutrient deficiency affecting the vulnerable groups including adolescent girls which reduces the capacity to learn and work,’ she said.
A supervisor in the Social Welfare division of Mon district, L Amei Konyak, spoke at the event on the topic importance of hygiene and sanitation and the right age for marriage. She said that early marriage ie., before age of 18 for girls in India is a violation of human rights. It will have an impact on physical growth, health, mental and emotional development and educational opportunities, the gathering was told.
Konyak advised the adolescent girls to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to lead healthier fulfilled lives. She mentioned that in order to prevent health-related problems, healthy behaviour must be adopted for a holistic development and better future, the IPR stated.
More than 70 adolescent girls representing all Anganwadi centres in Mon block attended the programme, the IPR stated.
The programme was organised by the Mon Block Convergence Action Plan Committee under the aegis of the Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyaan, the IPR added.
