KOHIMA, JUL 16: Parliamentary Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, Deo Nukhu, has stressed on the need to have good engineering colleges in the state capital and also to upgrade the existing Government Polytechnic Kohima (GPK) to a full-fledged engineering college.
He said this during the inauguration of the newly constructed academic building of GPK today in its campus. The three-room building constructed under State Plan 2015-16, was completed in a record time of two months since the construction started on May 9, 2016, under the initiative of Zhapulhoulie Rupreo, lecturer and a civil engineer.
Nukhu informed that he had negotiated with some universities outside the state to set up more engineering colleges in the state. He, however, said people were not so keen and willing to come to the hilly region. According to him, the other party(s) proposed for the college near the train station and the airport for easy accessibility.
With three polytechnics in the State namely Government Polytechnic Kohima, Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu and ICIT at Mokokchung, Nukhu expressed hope that it would be upgraded to full-fledged engineering colleges in the near future as is happening in many parts of India.
He expressed his happiness that GPK has started the civil engineering courses last year apart from the present available courses like MOP, fashion technology and computer science and hope that more courses would be introduced in the years to come. He also appreciated some of the top designers of the State, the products of the institution for bringing laurels and fame to the state through their works.
Nukhu also appreciated the institution for completing the three rooms in a record time of two months with the allotted fund, whereas any project usually takes two years to complete spending huge amount of money.
He expressed hope that before the next financial year, it would be able to complete the first floor to have more rooms to accommodate more students.
The students were also advised to work hard sincerely and get very good academic reports not just to get a job, but to pursue higher studies and become an important engineer of the State. Earlier, Nukhu also unveiled the plaque of the new building.
Giving a brief report on the building construction, Er. Vipulhou Lhoungu, Principal GPK, said the building was completed in two months time with the allotted fund of Rs 16,86,316 released by the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education during May 2016.
He has appreciated the quality workmanship of the people involved in the construction of the building and completing the same in a record time.
The programme was chaired by Er. Arjun Singh, Director of Technical Education, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Zhapulhoulie Rupreo and benediction by Keduhiwe Kapfo. The gathering was enthralled with a special number presented by Keneisanuo Dzüvichü.
