Dimapur, Nov. 9 (EMN): The Department of Chemistry, Nagaland University, Lumami is organising a National Seminar on “chemistry in interdisciplinary research” (NSCIR 2018) from Nov. 9 to 10. During the inaugral session, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University also inaugurated the seminar hall of the department.
The head of department, Prof. Dipak Sinha, while delivering the welcome address, said the seminar was very special being held during the year-long celebration of 25 years of Nagaland University as well as the 125th birth anniversary of Prof. S.N. Bose. He introduced the dignitaries present at the inaugural session. He also shared that 57 abstracts were received for the Seminar. Also, in two days, there would be 15 invited talks, 32 oral presentations, and 4 invited lectures.
Short speeches were delivered by Prof. M. Indira Devi, Dean, School of Sciences, Prof. Samir Kumar Pal, S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, and Prof. Diwan S. Rawat, Delhi University. This was followed by a speech from Prof. Pardeshi Lal. Appreciating the department for organizing a seminar of interdisciplinary nature, he asserted that today is the age where the basic sciences are converging to meet the most important needs of the present day through high-yielding plants, faster-growing animals, etc. Bioinformatics, for example, allows testing of drugs through computer-designed simulation system. Interdisciplinary effort also includes finding ways and means of curbing pollution, bio-degradation of wastes, etc. In short, interdisciplinary research must look at the interest of mankind. He concluded by saying that honest effort will result in changing the entire chemistry of interdisciplinary research.
The soft copy of the Abstract was released by the Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Upasana Bora Sinha, Assoc. Professor, Department of Chemistry & Convener, NSCIR-2018. She thanked the speakers as well as the sponsoring organisations, Nagaland University, DST-SERB, New Delhi, and S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata.
