NTPRADAO disappointed over visa denial for Rev. Franklin Graham

DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Transparency Public Rights Advocacy and Direct Action Organisation (NTPRADAO) has expressed disappointment over the denial of a visa to Rev. Franklin Graham.

In a press release, the organisation stated that the decision has created "unnecessary misunderstanding" and affected the sentiments of Christians in general and the Naga community in particular.

It reminded that the concept of "Atithi Devo Bhava" (the guest is God) is deeply ingrained in Indian culture, reflecting the nation's tradition of treating guests with immense respect and friendliness.

The organisation acknowledged that the Ministry of External Affairs might have its reasons for the denial but urged External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar to resolve the matter in accordance with Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to freely practise religion.

It stated that foreign tourists are generally permitted to attend religious ceremonies and saw no reason why Rev. Franklin Graham should be an exception.

NTPRADAO urged the government to reconsider its decision and facilitate the visit, stating that it would promote interfaith harmony and strengthen bonds between nations. It further requested the government to ensure that visa policies are framed to promote cultural exchange and religious tolerance.

“We believe that Rev. Franklin Graham's visit would have been an opportunity for India in general and Nagaland in particular to showcase its commitment to religious freedom and cultural exchange and to strengthen its ties with the international community. We hope that the government will take a more nuanced approach in the future, balancing its security concerns with the need to promote cultural exchange and people-to-people diplomacy,” it read.
