Targeting the younger generation to be ambassadors of energy conservation and help fight climate change and global warming, Nagaland State Designated Agency (NSDA), Electrical Inspectorate Power Department, Government of Nagaland, in collaboration with Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Ministry of Power, Government of India, and Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I) on June 7 kicked off its awareness campaign on energy conservation at different educational institutions.
Greenwood Higher Secondary School and Vision Home Higher Secondary School were the first two educational institutions where students were given a succinct lesson with the help of a power point presentation on today’s world energy resources scenario and everyday tips towards its conservation.
Resource person Nilanjan Bose, Senior Manager of Enfragy Solutions India Pvt Ltd and BEE certified energy manager, impressed upon the students that energy can be conserved in our everyday lives by limiting energy uses at homes and undertaking effective energy-saving ideas in the process.
Out of the total home energy use, Bose revealed that more than 44% of energy is consumed at home via heating and cooling, 26% in cooking and appliances, 14% in hot water, 9% in refrigerator, and 7% in lighting. However, all that intimidating percentage of energy use at home can be changed by changing how we use it, he stated.
Also highlighting the importance of buying and using only BEE star labeled appliances, Bose informed that the Energy Star label on a home appliance means it uses less energy. This not only benefits the environment, it also cuts cost for the people who use them. Using Energy Star compliant home appliances results in significantly reduced energy costs, he maintained.
Refrigerators, water-heaters, tubular fluorescent lamps, room air-conditioners, ceiling fans, induction motors, LPG stoves, and other such products form a major part of power usage in a household.
“Always insist for maximum number of stars in products, at least 3 stars and above,” he said, adding that with Energy Star compliance, these products will naturally be more efficient in their energy usage, bringing down electricity costs.
Other resource person includes Sukanya Bose, Assistant Director of Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I), and Aditya Sen, BCC&I.
Earlier delivering the key note address, R Angami, Chief Electrical Inspector, NSDA, highlighted the objectives and different activities undertaken by the agency to reduce energy intensity through conservation.
Quiz competition on energy conservation was also conducted where in five winners from each schools were given awarded prizes.
Mention may be made that the Nagaland State Designated Agency (NSDA), Electrical Inspectorate Power Department, has roped in BCC&I on a one year contract to organize campaigns on energy conservation in the State and also spread awareness through electronic media and internet portals.
