Kohima, Jan 6: Alleging that demonetisation has become destructive and an embarrassment to the nation, Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress (NPYC) today demanded a ‘white paper’ from the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to expose the truth behind demonetisation.
Speaking to media person during a press conference held in its office, NPYC president, Vilhousielie Kenguruse said RBI has lost its credibility and reputation after demonetisation. He also maintained that cashless payment which Modi has been talking about is not practicable in Nagaland as 90% of the rural population do not have access to those facilities.
In a representation addressed to PM, Narendra Modi through the Commissioner of Nagaland, it asked how much black money has been unearthed since November 8, 2016?
NPYC has also demanded Modi to furnished details on how many lives have been lost due to demonetisation and why the government has not paid any compensation to the families of the deceased. While acknowledging demonetisation as a good initiative, Kenguruse however said it has become a ‘flopped system’ in the country as it was done without proper consultation with RBI and experts. In this regard, it asked Modi government to explain the process of consultation and preparedness followed prior to the implementation of demonetisation and also why experts, economists or the RBI were not consulted before unleashing this ‘draconian policy’ upon the people.
It also demanded the government to place names of all persons, institutions and entities that deposited Rs 25 lakh or more in bank accounts in the six months preceding the November 8, 2016.
Putting forth five points demand on behalf of the people of India, NPYC has demanded to lift all restrictions on withdrawal of money with immediate effect. Till the time these restrictions are in place, it demanded that a special interest at the rate of 18% per annum should be given to all account holders and that all charges on digital transactions should be abolished.
NPYC asked that the rate of rations distributed under the PDS system should be halved for the period of a year under the provisions of Food Security Act, and in addition, a special one-time bonus of 20% be provided over and above the MSP of all rabi crops.
Stating that women has undergone immense suffering due to demonetisation, it asked the Modi government to deposit Rs 25,000 in the account of at least one woman belonging to each BPL family as compensation.
NPYC demanded that the number of guaranteed work days and the wage rate under MGNREGA should be doubled for a period of one year. It also asked the government to organise a special drive to identify and register all those who have lost job since November 8, 2016, and provide them compensation at the applicable minimum wage rate for a time period extending up to March 31, 2017.
The representation also demanded that income tax and sales tax rebate of 50% be given to small shopkeepers and businesses and that the central government should compensate the state governments for the loss of revenue incurred on account of this exemption.
NPYC further also asked the State government to thoroughly ponder on demonetisation which is immensely affecting the common people and not to simply accept it without considering the consequences on the people.
