- DIMAPUR — The MLA and state president of the
National People's Party (NPP), A Nyamnyei Konyak, and the rank and file of the
NPP Nagaland greeted the Konyak and Phom communities on the occasion of the
Aoleang and Monyu festivals, respectively.
- In a message, the party stated that Aoleang Monyu is a
vibrant week-long festival observed by the Konyak Naga people, primarily in
Nagaland's Mon district. It is their most significant celebration, marking the
arrival of spring and seeking a bountiful harvest; it is a pre-harvest
festival.
- “The Aoleang festival holds deep significance for the Konyak
tribe,” it read, adding that the festivities bid goodbye to the harsh winter
and welcome the warm spring season.
- The message noted that it also marks the beginning of
cultivation for the new season. The festival coincides with the sowing of
seeds, and rituals are performed to seek blessings from the divine spirits for
a bountiful harvest.
- ‘Aoleang brings together families, relatives, in-laws, and
friends for a joyous occasion of feasting, dancing, and merrymaking. It is also
a time for us to remember our near and dear ones who have left for the heavenly
abode. Celebrated from the first week of April, this festival is a colourful
explosion of traditions. Each day is marked by specific rituals and customs,’
it read.
