DIMAPUR — President of the Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (NPMCC), Akumla Pongen, attended the ‘Nari Nyay Andolan’ held at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, organised by the All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) on the July 29 last.

An update from NPMCC stated that the protest is a nationwide movement for social and economic justice for the womenfolk of the nation and would continue till the central government accedes to their three core demands.

The first demand called for political empowerment and greater participation of women in policy-making and governance. It has demanded to immediately implement the Women's Reservation Act in both parliament and the state legislative assemblies, ensuring proportionate reservation and participation of women from the OBC and the most backward classes.

The second demand was to provide relief to half of the country's population, who are fighting a painful battle against the scourges of rising inflation and unemployment on a daily basis. It demanded the central government to adopt the Mahalaxmi Yojana, a financial assistance scheme targeting the women of the nation promised by the Congress party under its Nari Nyay Guarantee, and start transferring INR 8500 per month (or INR 100000 annually) directly to the bank accounts of one woman from every poor family in the country.

The third demand called for right to social justice and security. It claimed that crimes against women across the country are continuously on the rise and the fear of the law among the criminals is waning. It has cited the recent tragic incident where two women were buried alive in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, putting the entire country to shame.

Besides, it stated that cases of murder, rape, gang rape and other heinous crimes against women are being reported across the nation with little signs of abatement anytime soon.

Report stated that the movement would commence from New Delhi and spread throughout the length and breadth of the nation till their demands is fulfilled and justice is served.
